Nobody at bOing

Motionhouse headline bOing! 2020

Motionhouse announces the first tour of Nobody, the company’s new dance-circus production, which will open at the bOing! International Family Festival in Canterbury on the 29th August 2020, run by the Gulbenkian arts centre at the University of Kent, one of the commissioners of the show.

The show, which is made for audiences of all ages, will use magical dance-circus to take audiences on a fantastical and spellbinding journey, packed with visual magic, using Motionhouse’s renowned highly physical style. Digital projections transform the world onstage, exploring worlds of illusion and the ever-shifting realities of our inner dreams and our everyday life.

Oliver Carruthers, Director of Gulbenkian said: “We are so excited to have Motionhouse back at bOing! this year with NOBODY. Their spectacular outdoor piece WILD was the talk of bOing! 2019, and their indoor performances include incredible digital projections that add a whole other layer to the experience. We are lucky to have Motionhouse regularly here at Gulbenkian, our audiences love everything that they do, and I know NOBODY will be a massive hit at this year’s bOing! We are also thrilled to be co-commissioning this piece that will go on to tour the UK and internationally.”

In an incredible opportunity for young creatives, young people can be a part of the makingof Nobody by uploading creative work in response to the question #WhoAreYou? on a specially created digital platform. Creations will be viewed by Motionhouse’s Artistic Director, Kevin Finnan, and the company’s dancers to inspire them while they are making Nobody over the coming months. Kevin Finnan said: “The content we’ve received so far from young people in response to the question ‘Who Are You? is fascinating. I am looking forward to seeing more of their ideas – and who knows, maybe somebody’s work might even inspire parts of the show!”

Audiences can also follow the Nobody Diaries and Motionhouse’s social media for regular behind-the-scenes updates as the show is made.

Finnan added: “Making new work is always an exciting time for me and the company. Over the past 10 years we have made three major shows as part of a trilogy and Nobody is a next step on for me. The skills and the direction of the company has changed – we’re really embracing the relationship between dance, digital and circus in a new way for this production; developing our movement language and playing with the digital imagery in a different way. I’m very hopeful that this will be an exciting show for audiences – I think it will look quite different from the last few shows that we’ve made.”

Early bird tickets are on sale for Nobody from 28 Feb until 26 March, at just £4 per person, available from www.boingfestival.com or from the Gulbenkian Ticket and Information line on 01227 769075.

After bOing!, Nobody will set off on a major tour that will see the West Midlands premiere of Nobody at Midlands Arts Centre in Birmingham – also a commissioner of the production – and dates at 9 more venues in the UK and Europe, with a further 16 on the next leg of the tour to be announced soon.

Nobody is commissioned by and created in partnership with the University of Kent, ART31 and Midlands Arts Centre. Supported by Dance Hub Birmingham, Arts Connect and the Leche Trust.
